Know Your Firearm
Before handling or using any firearm, become familiar with its operation, safety features, owner’s manual, and applicable safety procedures.
Always treat every firearm as if it is loaded. Keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction and keep your finger outside the trigger guard until you are prepared to fire. Appropriate eye and hearing protection should be used whenever a firearm is discharged.
If you are unfamiliar with a particular firearm or its operation, seek qualified instruction before use.
SECURE STORAGE
Prevent Unauthorized Access
Firearms should be stored securely whenever they are not under the immediate control of an authorized and responsible adult.
Use an appropriate safe, gun safe, lock box, gun case, or other secure storage device designed to restrict unauthorized access. When appropriate, ammunition should also be secured separately from firearms.
Particular care should be taken in households where children or other unauthorized individuals may be present. Firearms should never be left where they can be accessed by children.
Responsible storage helps reduce the risk of accidental injury, theft, and unauthorized use.

Safe handling should be practiced consistently, regardless of familiarity or experience.
Keep firearms pointed in a safe direction, keep your finger outside the trigger guard until ready to fire, and ensure you understand the firearm’s controls and operating procedures before use.
When cleaning, inspecting, or unloading a firearm, follow the manufacturer’s instructions and appropriate safety procedures. Always verify that the firearm is unloaded before performing maintenance or storage procedures.

TRANSPORTATION & VEHICLE SECURITY
Take Security Seriously
Firearms should not be left unsecured or unattended in vehicles.
If transportation in a vehicle is necessary, use an appropriate secure storage device and keep the firearm out of sight. A locked vehicle, glove compartment, or center console should not automatically be considered adequate secure firearm storage.
When you reach your destination, return the firearm to an appropriate secure storage location as soon as reasonably possible.
Always comply with the laws governing firearm transportation in the jurisdictions through which you travel.
PREVENTING LOSS & THEFT
Know What You Own
Maintaining accurate personal records of your firearms can assist with identification and recovery if a firearm is ever lost or stolen.
Record relevant identifying information and keep those records securely stored separately from your firearms.
If a firearm is lost or stolen, contact your local law enforcement agency promptly and provide an accurate description and identifying information. ATF recommends maintaining a personal firearms record for this purpose.

Children should be taught never to touch a firearm and to immediately notify a responsible adult if they encounter one.
